EAST BRUNSWICK — A Florida woman died Sunday morning after the car she was riding in collided with a Ford pickup truck.
Louise Newman, 84, was traveling west on Old Stage Road with her daughter, Trudy Grabel, 55, of Morganville. Newman was in the passenger seat and Grabel was driving.
Police speculate that Grabel ran a red light, causing Richard Depue, 42, the Dayton section of South Brunswick, to smash into the side of her vehicle at the intersection of New Brunswick Avenue and Old Stage Road.
Depue’s car then swerved into the traffic light, knocking it and the control box down, causing a power outage at the scene which lasted until approximately 3 p.m.
East Brunswick Fire District 1 was called to extricate Newman from the car. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:20 a.m. by Dr. Cohen of Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center, New Brunswick.
Both the East Brunswick and Spotswood rescue squads were at the scene. Grabel and Depue were transported to Robert Wood Johnson, suffering from abrasions and neck/back pain respectively. Neither was admitted.
Police closed off the area for three hours.
Police are asking that any witnesses to the accident call Patrolman Gerald Ravaioli in the Traffic Division at (732) 390-6969.
