Monmouth RFC kicks off season at St. Pat’s tourney

The Monmouth Rugby Football Club literally got its feet wet at the season opener on March 11 in Van Cortlandt Park, the Bronx, N.Y., for the fourth annual Lansdowne St. Patrick’s Day Tournament.

Playing in a torrential downpour, Monmouth’s A team pounded Hartford in the first match which only yielded a 13-5 victory. Captain Chris Kaldrovics and Jason Peterson were awarded tries during the match, while Pete Malanga cut through the wind and rain with his three-point penalty kick. The A’s second match against Old Blue was hard fought in the rucks and mauls, but Old Blue won with a 17-0.

Monmouth’s B side had an uphill battle all day. The first match was unsuccessful against nationally ranked U Conn., who maintained possession throughout the match leaving the final 34-0.

The second match was against a familiar Rockaway side. Monmouth played a very strong defensive match; however, the offensive attack was a struggle against the elements. Hard rains and wind caused many a lost ball on which Rockaway gained advantage on breakaways. The final was 17-5.
